I’m in Abilene this weekend, and I’m watching the radar like a hawk. I drove up here in our new Civic, and the last thing I want is to have it pummeled by hail. I’ve got it parked facing out in the hotel parking lot, and I have plans to run out and drive it under the hotel roof by the door, or next door under a gas station awning. Which means that I have to stay up—and relatively sober—until this shit passes.
Here’s the same map with the storm tracks added. Abilene is at the top right. This shit is moving slowly west, but sliding northward along the cold front. The lead edge is about 25 miles away now. Hail is predicted. Ain’t nobody got time for that.
UPDATE: Okay, see that inverted triangle? That’s a tornadic thunderstorm. Really, fuck that. I ain’t got time for this shit. Note that the center of the cone of probability is right over north Abilene, which is where I’m staying on I-20.

So you have insurance? Deductibles aside, it makes for a sound nights sleep.

It’s supposed to hit here around 2pm tomorrow. Also, I didn’t realize Abilene was so close.

A lot of elementary schools have covered steel roof dropoff points for the kiddos as well. Also banks drive-up windows. Google Map is your friend. I just mention multiple places because people go crazy parking under steel roofs and overpasses (ARGH!) when it hails, so it’s good to have a backup or two!
Spent a combined 30-some years in west and north Texas. Not sure where in TX you’re from, but springtime in west and north Texas means hail and sometimes giant hail. And obviously tornadoes. Hail sale all the cars!

So close to what?

I do, but I’d rather not have the hassle. About two weeks ago, a drunk totaled my 2001 Golf , and about three weeks before that lightning took out my furnace. I’m tired of talking to my insurance company, and I like my new car.

I live in Austin. I thought about driving home tonight to stay ahead of the weather, but I already paid for my room. I’ve got two very close options, and I’ve got a line on a self serve car wash that isn’t too far. But I’ve had a couple of drinks, so I don’t want to drive too far. I’d rather have a bank, though. I have visions of the gas station roof blowing over while I’m sitting under it. There was softball-sized hail in the Dallas area just a few days ago.

Yea, those gas stations roofs are crap. As long as the windspeed is down, that shouldn’t be an issue though. You can also use the bed comforter if you get desperate. The things I’ve seen...
My sis got some baseball sized stuff outta that. I think it’ll be their 3rd roof in 10yrs because of wind/tornados and hail. I don’t miss that part of living in DFW. I rode my moto home through some nickel/quarter sized crap when I lived up there once. No choice and no cover - hurt like a mother even with my gear on. Also no traction lol.

Radar is reporting .5-.75" hail possible. Probably not big enough to break the glass, but probably big enough to make some dents. I’m about ready to go move the car. It’s getting close.

Yeah, thin ass sheet metal they use these days is not good with hail. It’s also bad for your noggin. Stay safe and good luck with the car.
